Thermal paper is paper that is impregnated with a chemical that changes color when exposed to heat. It is used in thermal printers and particularly in cheap, lightweight devices such as adding machines, cash registers, and credit card terminals.

The paper is impregnated with a solid-state mixture of a dye and a suitable matrix; a combination of a fluoran leuco dye and an octadecylphosphonic acid is an example. When the matrix is heated above its melting point, the dye reacts with the acid, shifts to its colored form, and the changed form is then conserved in metastable state when the matrix solidifies back quickly enough.

Most printer manufacturers offer ribbon/label combinations which are known to work well together, which is particularly important as some combinations produce no image at all. Plastic labels with resin ribbons will survive outside in full sunlight, can stand immersion in water and may be resistant to chemicals and oils dependent on type. Epson started as watch making company Seiko Epson Corporation, Japan. Epson was established in 1961 to manufacture precision parts for Seiko watches, back then it was called Shinsu Precision Manufacturing Company.

Epson’s first foray into the printing and imaging business was the Olympics of 1964 held in Tokyo. The company was awarded a contract to develop a precision timer for the Games. The printer they developed for the Olympics – EP101 is also, where Epson derives its name! It was one of the first printers for electronic calculators to hit the commercial market. It was the beginning of Epson’s journey in the printing and imaging business.

The TX-80, Epson’s first dot matrix printer hit the market in 1978, then in 1984 came the SQ 2000 it’s first inkjet printer. The TM 930 Epson’s pc-pos package printer launched in 1990 created a new market in the printing business. Epson gave a number of first printers to the world among which is Epson stylus 800- an inkjet printer equipped with micro peizo technology launched in March 1993, and then the Epson Stylus Color in May 1994 was the world’s first 720 dpi color inkjet printer.

September 1998 saw the launch of TM-H5000 its first hybrid printer which featured fast quiet printing and copy functionality.

The Ultrachrome K3 Ink

The Epson UltraChrome K3 Ink is a high-density resin coated pigment ink. It comes in two types Black & White and Color. It has a wide color gamut for both types. The black palette consists of three shades of black- Black, light black and light light black. The color palette consists of the standard cyan, light cyan, magenta, light magenta and yellow. Oh and it has two user exchangeable black ink modes- photo and matte!

Now you will wonder what is so special about Ultrachrome K3. A simple comparison between the traditional toner manufacturing process and the ultrachrome K3 process will answer the question – traditional toners were manufactured by grinding the toner particles mechanically to the smallest possible particle size that can be achieved mechanically; now the major disadvantage here is the energy and hence cost. The resin is placed in a water-based environment where the particles are allowed to grow in a controlled environment. However, the process is not as simple as it sounds!

New Nvidia Cards – Fermi

nvidiaCompany Nvidia unveiled details of its future graphics processors. The code name for these chips Fermi, and their architecture differs substantially from the GeForce, Quadro, and Tesla.

It is known that a new generation of Nvidia graphics chips will increase the number of cells to 512. The speed of the chips will increase substantially.

In addition,  chips Fermi among the first devices of this class will have a hierarchical cache memory. The first level of cache will be used for operational information, the second – to solve more complex and resource-intensive tasks.

It is assumed that the first graphics card based on Fermi chips will appear before the end of this year.

Sharp announces few layered Blue Ray

Today, the most universal optical media in the world is Blu-ray 50 GB disc, with two layers. Japanese company Sharp has developed a laser that can record three-and four-layer discs.

More layers to write to Blu-ray disc allows the laser, which I more powerful than standard. It means that the drive can store up to one hundred gigabytes of data.

In Sharp emphasize that their new laser is ready for mass production. However, prior to the approval of specifications three and four-layer Blu-ray discs will remain an experimental model.

By the way, the drives, which allows to record a new laser Sharp, does not brings a huge capacity. Previously, engineers from GE announced the 500 GB drive, and Pioneer, by 2013, intends to release a 1 TB disc.

Are miniature processors the future of green data centers?

Think virtualization in a data center, and you most likely think of the latest generation of multi-core chips, such as Intels recently released Nehalem-EX processor, which comes with eight cores a a whopping 2,300,000,000 transistors. But the future of green data centers may be in the opposite end of the spectrum, with server clusters built using many small, power-efficient processors.

The Power of Software blog gives a very good rundown about the possibility of using small computers and processors instead of large ones like the Nehalem-EX. It mentions the Dell XS11-VX8, also called “Fortuna.” The Via Nano powers Fortuna, and it is a 64-bit chip that offers hardware virtualization for Hyper-V. Amazingly, it uses only 29 watts when at full load, and 15 watts when idling, according to the blog — less power than a UPS uses. Load up plenty of these devices and you can get plenty of computing power, while using not much electricity.

There is been talk for a while that the low-power Atom chip, used primarily to power netbooks, can be used for data centers as well. The blog points out that Microsoft Research has already built two server clusters using Atom processors controlled by the Marlowe control system that in the blogs words, ””””can place servers into the sleep or hibernate low power states and then wake them up. This dynamic state control enables groups of computers to respond to changes in load very rapidly.””””

Will you be using Atom chips and Fortuna today or in the near future to power your data center? Most likely not. But do not be surprised if you do a little further on. Just as smaller servers replaced big iron mainframes, one day devices like Fortuna and the Atom chip may power data centers, and save plenty of electricity while doing so.
